Our department & special service

General Surgery

A surgeon operating. General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland (depending on local referral patterns). They also deal with diseases involving the skin, breast, soft tissue, trauma, peripheral vascular surgery and hernias and perform endoscopic procedures such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Gynaecology

Gynecology deals with any ailment concerning the reproductive organs; uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, ovaries and vagina. A gynecologist may also treat related problems in the bowel, bladder and urinary system since these are closely related to female reproductive organs.

Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to these agents.

Neonatal

Neonatal means ‘new born’. Neonatal units like ours specialise in the care of babies born early, with low weight or who have a medical condition that requires specialised treatment. Four levels of care Within the unit, there are four different levels of care: Intensive care - provided for babies who have serious problems, who are very premature (those born more than three months early) and/or have an extremely low birth weight (birth weight less than 1500 grams). In the Neonatal Unit, intensive care is provided in rooms 1, 2 and 7. High dependency care - provided for babies with less serious problems but who still need a great deal of observation and support and for those who are recovering from critical illness. In the Neonatal Unit, high dependency care is provided in rooms 3, 4 & 5. Low dependency - provided for babies who do not require continuous observation and/or who are stable and growing. In the Neonatal Unit, special care is provided in room 6. Transitional care - is provided for babies who need some medical treatment but who are well enough to be cared for at their mother’s bedside. Transitional care is located within the maternity area of the hospital.

Nephrology

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys: the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy (dialysis and kidney transplantation).

Neurology

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems (and their subdivisions, the autonomic and somatic nervous systems), including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle. Neurological practice relies heavily on the field of neuroscience, which is the scientific study of the nervous system.

Obstetrics

Obstetrics deals with the care of the pregnant women, the unborn baby, labor and delivery and the immediate period following childbirth. The obstetrician ensures that mother and child get the best prenatal care to ensure labor and delivery is accomplished without complications and that should intervention be needed, it is done quickly and safely.

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A medical professional who practices oncology is an oncologist.

Orthopedics

Orthopedics is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, correction, prevention, and treatment of patients with skeletal deformities - disorders of the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves and skin. These elements make up the musculoskeletal system.

Pharmacy is the science and technique of preparing and dispensing drugs. It is a health profession that links health sciences with chemical sciences and aims to ensure the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs.

Radiotherapy

Radiation therapy is a treatment used for cancer and, less commonly, thyroid disease, blood disorders, and noncancerous growths.

Rheumatology

Rheumatology represents a subspecialty in internal medicine and pediatrics, which is devoted to adequate diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases (including clinical problems in joints, soft tissues, heritable connective tissue disorders, vasculitis and autoimmune diseases). This field is multidisciplinary in nature, which means it relies on close relationships with other medical specialties.
